Assignment #2 I believe

LATE

1. Boyle is considered the last alchemist and the first chemist because he spent years searching for the Elixir, he didn't reject alchemy, he rejected that people tried to make money off of it. However, he did support the chemists, who were truly trying to understand it.

2. His work was used mainly to see if a substance, such as gold, were truly that substance.

3. Boyle's Law means that if you have a gas kept at a constant temperature, it will have the same amount of pressure as what is being applied ot it.

4. His law made it so there was stated rules, that all science musst follow, rules of what is possible.

5. The Greeks stated that Air is one of earths Four elements, Earth, Fire, Water, Air. Aristotle said that it was weightless. Evangelista Torricelli and Vincenzo Viviani discovered that it had mass. This was provven wrong because elements can not be broken down any farther.

Assign #1. (I'm pretty sure)

LATE.

1. Phlogiston is the "substance" in matters that appeared when the object was being burned.

2. Alchemy is considered part wishful thinking, part serious science, and park 'hokum'. because many were trying to get gold by using other substances, some were studying the true makeup of elements, and others were simply taking advantage of people and their moneys

3. If a substance is an acid, it will contain many hydrogen Ions. If it's a base, instead it will contain many Oxygen-Hydrogen pairs.

4. The original nine elements of the ancients are gold, silver, copper, tin, iron, lead, mercury, carbon and sulfur.

5. The first to elements that can be attributed to a discoverer are Phosphorus and Arsenic.

6. Both quests are still in existance. Mankind has always been filled with greed. No longer the greed of lead to gold, but the possibility of making more money, or counterfitting it.

The want for eternal life is still present in the fact that we constantly create new medicines to make our lives longer and longer, we develop stem cell research and other things, that are used to prolong life well past the point of living.

King Of Poisons and Poison Of Kings

I am the King of Poisons, and the Poison of Kings
To death, my foul vemon sings

I form myself colorless, so hard to be seen
My rhombohedral shape, makes me quite keen

In nature I am discovered in the ground
In water I dissolve, naught to be found

I am the deadly metal, strengthening my brothers, Tin and Copper
And quite a favorite among that Victorian Shopper

My grand number, is that of thirty three
While used, in treating the tree

With chalk and vinegar, I beautify
Yet in your drink, Life, I do deny

When used to keep your plants safe, I am quite a charm
Yet hiding in your well, I will only do harm

I was discovered by the man called "the Great"
Nearly Eight-Hundred years ago to date

So ask yourself, I do decree,
"Do you, truly know me?"

Copernicus proposed the idea that the sun is a fixed point, and other planets rotate around it. He also stated that the earth had a slow turn of its own.

Basically, Perspective is the art of drawing a threedimensional object, on a two dimentional piece of paper. I know something about art, so this involves a point, know as the vanishing point, and having all other lines look as if they were going towards that object.

I believe the area was so fertile with ideas because it was a hub for society. There was a tolerance of religion and of the sciences. The people flocked here during the year of Jubilee.

Reading Response One

Disagreement is an essential element of the scientific process because it allows us to see something we believe to be wrong, examine it, and then try to disprove it.

One scientific issue that has slightly confused me is stem cell research. Other than the fact that I don't know much about it, It doesnt make sense to me that it has so much potential, so many ways to better mankind, yet we cannot do it. We state that it goes against god, but really, doesn't most science? Did we not disprove the geo-centric model, that the catholic church fought so hard to keep? Science was orginally made to help prove a god, now religion and science are opposites, enemies, two forces against eachother. If it betters mankind, why should we not do it?
